NOTES/GUIDELINES TO CONTRIBUTORS
The African Law Journal invites submissions from students and lawyers for publication in her 2018 journal. There are two submission types:
1. Articles
2. Literary works
*Please note, the African Law Journal does not accept abstract alone. We will not also accept submissions that do not meet the stipulated guidelines for each submission type.* Please read the submission guidelines and carefully before making your submission.
African Law Journal provides the opportunity for Lawyers and students to discuss current issues as well as put forward their opinions about the issues. It also aims at creating an avenue for lawyers and students to write on things that bother their minds. Through this journal, many would have the knowledge of the law.
The African Law Journal is published annually. Commentaries and Contributions to the journal are peer-assessed. The journal is devoted to law and contemporary issues of significant research value.
Unsolicited contributions including essays, commentaries and case reviews are welcome on contemporary legal issues of significant value.
Authors are requested to follow the guidelines listed below:
1. Contributions should be submitted in soft copy as an email attachment and sent to this email address: africanlawjournal@gmail.com.
2. The deadline for submission of papers for every edition is May which is fifth month of the year, annually to enable adequate time for review. Any submission after the deadline will be published in the next edition.
3. The title of submission should be brief, attractive and accurate in describing what the paper is all about. Heading and sub-heading within the text should be short and very clear and numbered appropriately in Arabic numeral. Headings and subheadings are to be in initial cap(Proper Nouns should be capitalized at all times)
4. Contributions submitted must not be more than 13, 000 words; formatted on A4 paper with 2.5cm margins, 1.5 line spacing and Times New Roman font size 14;
5. Title(s), name(s) and degrees of author(s) should appear only at the top on the cover page of the article, under the heading; while affiliations and addresses should appear at the footnote on the cover page.
6. Contributions should be submitted with an abstract of not more than 300 words, indented and italised, conclusion and recommendations should be included.
7. As a condition for publication, contributors must state in their forwarding letter or email that the article has not been and will not be submitted elsewhere for publication until a decision is made by the editors not to publish. The contributor shall also be deemed to have granted exclusive licence to publish the article in African Law Journal or any assignee to publish in hard copy and electronically.
8. Authors undertake responsibility to adhere to the public ethics for the accuracy of references.
9. Spellings shall be English.
10. Citation of sources should be placed in footnotes using MS Word auto format, single line spacing and indicated by superscript Arabic numerals placed in the text serial.
11. All chapters must be well researched and contain in depth analysis of the issues covered
12. Books: Author’s surname and initials, title of the book (in italics) the edition (if any), (publishers, place of publication, years of publication) page
Examples:
Sagay I.E., Nigerian Law of Contract, 2nd edition (Spectrum Law series Nigeria, 2000).
13. Journals: Author’s surname and initials, title of the article in inverted comma, the year (in bracket), the volume and number, name of the journal (in italics) the full pages and the particular page.
Examples:
Bassiouni, M.C., “The Time Has Come For An International Court”, (1991), 1(4) Indian International and Contemporary Law Review (IND. INT’L & COMP. L. REV.)
“Journal of Energy & Natural Resources Law” (2006) 24(2) Journal of Energy & Natural Resources Law, 278-280 at 276.
14. Cases and Statutes: Cases should follow the conventional way of citing case in each jurisdiction, but names of cases must be in italics. Full name of the statute and years of enactment as well as the chap (where relevant) should be stated.
15. Web Materials: full web address must be stated with the date of access in bracket.
16. Quotations: Double quotation should be used, but quotation within quotation should be single.
17. Abbreviations & Foreign Words: Helpful abbreviations such as id, ibid, op. cit., loc. Cit., supra, etc. should be used correctly, and in italics; Latin and other foreign language words should also be in italics.
18. Others: Papers should be typed on A4 paper size in word Microsoft; typed double spaced; foot notes and not end notes should be used and numbered automatically; font size for the body of the work is 14 while footnotes should be 10-font; Times New Roman should be used.
19. The footnote marker should come last after both the closing quotation mark and/or the punctuation. For example: the President said that this power “is not limited to defence against aggression from a foreign nation.”1 And not the President said that this power “is not limited to defence against aggression from a foreign nation2.”
20. If quoting internet sources: state the title of the article, the relevant web page, date and time visited. For instance: “Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining” http/www.africanbank.org visited 7/23/2004 at 1 pm.
21. All contributions must contain adequate references to sources or authorities relied upon and ensure both accuracy and relevance. Authors may be asked to revise their articles before publication.
22. Do not number your major headings in the paper. Number only your sub headings with (a), (b) etc. and sub-sub headings with (i), (ii) etc. The page numbering should be at the bottom.
23. You must italise all the cases cited.
24. The citation for statutes must be in the following style: for example, section 35(1)(e) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015 etc.
25. Contributions that do not comply with the House Style will not be considered for publication.
*SUBMISSION TYPES AND REQUIREMENTS*
*LITERARY WORK:* The background to your work is required if you are sending a poem. Your bio is required. Submission must not be more than one and a half pages.
*GENERAL REQUIREMENTS*
1. All submissions must be related to law
2. All submissions must be of a high professional standard
3. All submissions must be proofread and publication ready
4. All submissions must meet the submission format guidelines
5. All submission must be original.
The submission that does not meet these requirements will be returned to the author for necessary corrections or rejected as the case may be.
