Osun State police has arraigned three suspects before the Magistrate Court in Osogbo, Osun-State for conspiracy and taking part in an unlawful cult group.
It was gathered that the accused persons were apprehended on December 15 around 7:30 p.m. at BCG area in Osogbo, the capital of the state.
The suspects – Ogunjimi Taiwo, 25, Kehinde Jimoh, 35 and Dare Adesile, 33, are being tried under sections of the law punishable under section 517 of Criminal Code Cap 37 Vol II laws of Osun State of Nigeria 2003 and section 70 of criminal code CAP 34 vol. II laws of Osun-State of Nigeria 2003.
The three accused persons pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge filed against them by the police.
The counsel to the accused persons, Mr Ngu prayed the court to grant bail to his client and promised that they would not jump bail, as they would stand their trials but the prosecutor, Mr Joshua Oladoye, kicked against the bail application.
Mr Oladoye told the court that for the past two weeks now the police in the state had not been sleeping and that the turbulence caused by cultists in the state was becoming alarming”.
“Some of them would say they belong to Aye Confraternity while some others were membrs of the Eyie Confraternity which are causing many people in the state not to be at peace because of their activities,” he said.
The counsel, to the accused persons, Mr Ngu argued the objection of the bail application, insisting that the charge by the prosecutor is just an allegation which the prosecutor still have to prove to the court.
“My clients have never being arraigned nor arrested before on any issue,” he said, reminding the court that section 36 sub-section four of the law gives every citizens the liberty of freedom of movement.
After hearing their arguments, the Magistrate, Olushola Aluko, said the objection of the prosecutor was not legally backed and baseless in law.
He granted bail to the accused persons on the sum of 50,000 and the case was adjourned to January 9, 2017 for mention.
However, Channels Television’s correspondent Bosede Sodiq said that over the weekend some suspected cultist around Gbemu area in Osogbo killed someone and smashed the head of another suspected cultist with stone, leaving him in a state of comma.
